Dawson "Big D" Ingram was just as shocked as anybody when his dad, Black Dawg head coach David Ingram, gave him the bunt sign when he stepped up to the plate on Sunday in the 9-10 age fall ball championship game against "The Knockahomas." "Big D" has a reputation for being a heavy hitter around the Chelsea Youth Fields. He'd never been asked to bunt before.
Judging by the outcome, his dad may be giving him a few more bunt signs in the future. With the game tied 8-8 in the 6th inning, "Big D" laid a down a perfect bunt down the third base line to score speedy Clay DeWeese from third base and win the championship. |

"It feels great to be a fall ball champion," Ingram said. We just had a really good team this year. The Black Dawgs were led by the hard throwing Deweese and the monster mashing of Austin Collier. Collier got the scoring started by ripping a curveball from Mac McNamee into left center field to score two runs. The Knockahomas, coached by Terry Pouncey would not be down for long. After drawing a walk from DeWeese, speedy Gaston Pharr stole 2nd and 3rd base. Alex Foshee started the scoring for the Knockahoma's early as he drove in Pharr with a double. Ingram knew the Knockahomas would not go down easy. "I've been fortunate enough to coach in this league for 4 years," Ingram said. "There is not a tougher coach to prepare for than Terry Pouncey. He always has his kids ready to play." With the score tied 4-4, Black Dawg catcher Kyle Travelstead led off the fifth inning with a triple. Collier followed with a triple and the momentum shifted clearly to the Black Dawgs. Knockahoma assistant coach Mike McNamee sensed trouble when he saw Collier stepping in the batters box right after Travelstead had nailed the triple. "What can you say," McNamee said. "With a team as well coached and talented as the Black Dawgs, you can only hold them down so long. We did our best but we just came up a little short today. The Fall Ball Championship is about as big as they get, and we just about got it." The Knockahoma's were led in hitting by their powerful second baseman, Josh Baker, and hard hitting 3rd baseman, Wesley "Hollywood" Pouncey. "Hollywood" finished the game with two singles and 4 RBI's. Baker walked three times but also belted a ball that hit the top of the 315 foot fence in left centerfield but bounced back in play. "I did not see the ball hit the fence," Baker said. "My mom told me that it was really close to going over the fence." The Black Dawgs were led at the plate by "Big Al" who went 3-3 with 4 stolen bases. |
