It was supposed to be one of the more stressful moments of 8 year old Chelsea all-star softball player Allie "Speedy"Miller's life. After all, she was standing in the batters box in the final inning of the state championship game against Millbrook with the game tied 7-7. Apparently "Speedy" never got the memo that she was supposed to be nervous. All she did was just rope a line drive to the left field fence to score Chloe "Sunshine" Eidson from second base and bring home Chelsea's first state championship.
Miller's hit wasn't the only jaw-dropping moment of the championship game. In the first inning Millbrook , aided by a three run home run, took a 3-0 lead. Chelsea managed to score a run in each of the first three innings to tie the game at 3-3. Millbrook wasn't ready to cave in however as they pumped out three more runs to take a 6-3 lead heading into the fifth inning. Chelsea clawed their way back to tie the game in the final inning before Miller's heroics brought the title back to Chelsea.
Ironically, the Chelsea girls should have been spending their summer in the swimming pools and the ballet halls according to the fans in Columbiana. As soon as the All-Star teams were announced there was just nothing but pure venom and blood coming out of Columbiana fans as to who was the best softball team in the area. Chelsea seemed to handle the heated rivalry well, by just pummeling the trash talkers from Columbiana 30-0 on the diamond.
It was a special all star season for head coach Vince "The Legend" Golden's squad. They finished the season with a record of 24-4. Don't think for a minute that these girls played the Alabama school for the blind either. These Chelsea sisters were just pounding the likes of Mountain Brook, Hoover, Monrovia and of course Millbrook.
By the end of the summer these girls were rivaling the popularity of Chelsea Raw Dawg head baseball coach David Ingram. "It was as impressive a team as I have ever seen at that level, " Chico Rasmussen, the Vice President of the New England softball association said. "They just didn't have a weakness. From Gracie "Snaggle tooth" Bradford to Riley "Bean" Coyne, these girls were just relentless. I have not seen an outfield that tight since I witnessed T.H. Howard rob Starkville's Donterrius McGrews of a home run over the 10 foot fence in South Haven, Miss. during the boys world series."
Chelsea hitting coach Darrell Eidson was not surprised that the championship game was decided by a single run. "We wanted to play the best," Eidson said. "After playing 27 games, we felt like the two best teams out there were our girls and Millbrook's girls."
